Quote(s)
1.
For weeks, it was like he’d been loving
under water, trying to push an impossible weight through his day, barely
making it from morning to night. Missing her was an aching, gaping hole in
his heart, and he’d do anything, including saying the words he’d never said
to anyone before, to get her to come home with him. 2.
It almost killed me to walk away from
you, Luke. I can’t fall back into the ways things were. I won’t survive it. 3.
She’d give him everything and forget to
hold back anything for herself. Then in a few months, when he was tired of
playing house again or got scared of commitment, he’d bolt, and she’d be left
with nothing. A shell of the woman she was meant to be. 4.
Loving someone – the right someone –
came as easily to Claire as breathing. It was holding back that caused her
pain. Curtailing her natural inclination to share herself completely with the
man she loved had come close to destroying her. To her, loving someone had
always meant completely, no-holds-barred, not keeping anything back or
protecting herself. It made her stronger, better, able to do what needed to
be done. 5.
And as much as she’d loved being with a
man strong enough to help her fly, she couldn’t do it if she couldn’t trust
him to be her safety net, too. 6.
They both had to be strong, and they
both had to be vulnerable if they stood a chance of making this work. 7.
Instead of growling at the thought of
food, her stomach gave a little flip. 8.
Never trust an attorney unless you’re
paying him and then only with caution. 9.
Food tastes better when it’s made in
the things that belonged to the people who loved us. 10.
“What’s with the boxes? Why are you
taking stuff back to your old place?” he almost added Why are you keeping
your old place? but he knew the answer to that. She didn’t trust this
thing between them to work out, and she was leaving herself an exit strategy.
He hated it because it meant she wasn’t ready for everything he wanted to
give her, but he understood it. It was his fault she was holding back. 11.
Instead of sending him bolting for the
door to burn the image from his head with a string of fast cars and faster
women, the idea of having a baby with Claire cracked something wide open in
his chest, and he had his own Grinch-whose-heart-grew-three-times moment. 12.
It just that just because a blessing
isn’t planned for, doesn’t mean it isn’t a blessing. 13.
She’d known she was pregnant. She’d
made her peace with the morning sickness and strange cravings. Intellectually,
she understood that they were having a baby, but even with the changes to her
body, it hadn’t really sunk in until that moment that there was another
person growing inside her. One that she and Luke made together. 14.
We had the perfect set up until you and
Matthews came along and fucked it all up. 15.
A marriage is not a party. It only
needs you and me. |

relationship. This is when the bond stands strong. 3.
