2025/115 | REBECCA JENSHAK - "HATING THE PLAYER"

SYNOPSIS

Gavin Leonard is the worst.

He lives in the best party house off campus at Valley U, overrun by jocks galore.

I live next door, watching Jane Austen adaptations with my sketchbook in hand.

He stays on his side of the fence.

I stay on mine.

Now we're accidentally on a camping trip together, but there's only one tent left.

Gavin Leonard is the worst.

And he's the last guy who broke my heart.

READING EXPERIENCE

I love this story! There are several meaningful lessons it conveys. It’s about second chances and doing everything in one’s power to make things work—even if the outcome isn’t what was originally hoped for—because at the very least, it minimizes the lingering thoughts of what if.

Furthermore, it reminds us not to rush into decisions without thinking them through or carefully weighing what truly matters.

Another point that stood out to me is that art is subjective—everyone has their own cup of tea. Suggestions can be offered, but they shouldn’t be forced on others, as doing so might stifle the designer’s creativity and inspiration.

Besides that, some people, unfortunately, are just driven by negativity and don’t want others to be happy—for no clear reason. It’s often best to carry ourselves wisely and cautiously, to minimize the chances of getting hurt or dragged into unnecessary conflict.

Lastly, for me, the most powerful quote in the story is:

“Chances like this don't come around a second time. The worst thing in life is to sit around asking yourself what if.”
